About Mwamba

Mwamba Chikwemba is indeed considered a rising star in the Zambian art world, particularly for her visual art and mural work. She is known for her energetic, expressive portraits of women, often wearing headwraps, and for her exploration of cultural and spiritual themes related to the Zambian female experience.

Her art frequently delves into the cultural and spiritual significance of head wraps, as well as the broader role of women in Zambian society.

Mwamba has garnered several awards and recognition for her work, including being selected as Artist of the Month by the Germany Embassy in Lusaka, winning second prize at a national women’s workshop, and receiving the Cynthia Zukas Young Artist Award(1 St prize)

She has participated in international exhibitions and residencies, including the Great More Studios in South Africa and the Nafasi Arts space in Tanzania, further solidifying her international presence.

Mwamba is an active member of the Zambia National Visual Arts Council.

Her current artistic focus is on the transformative journey of motherhood, capturing the raw emotions and intense experiences of childbirth, and exploring how this life-changing event shapes and reshapes her identity.

“My painting style and technique is self-taught. I have a tendency to work on a rather large format, incorporating the use of contrast and good composition.

The subject matter in itself emphasizes pride, confidence, beauty and in this case usually young women, the subject being more often than not, women’s smiling faces. The colours, head wraps speak to the vibrating power of the female soul and eyes share the same hardship of being a woman today in a society dominated by men.
